What do I do with my used motor oil? And where does it end up?
Whether you change your own car’s oil or have it done at your local mechanic it may have crossed your mind what is done with used motor oil. You probably know it must not be thrown into the trash or poured down the drain because it will not break down and is toxic if introduced into environments of non-mechanical creatures. So what is the proper way to dispose the dirty substance and where exactly does it go?
Once the motor oil is collected in a leak proof container, like the bottle that the new, clean oil came in, it can be taken to most auto stores or even mechanic garages. (In many states it is required by law that motor oil be recycled) They collect the oil and give it to a different company that has found a need for it. These containers of used motor oil are then given a new life and recycled into other petroleum based products. They can be refined into heating fuels including diesel and used to create asphalt. Even after it is re-refined it still holds its lubrication qualities and can be used for machinery as well. Also, oil filters can be recycled as well and usually are accepted at the oil collection facility as well. This oil recycling program keeps oil from entering our soil and natural water resources. The more we continue to be mindful of what we do with our car products and fluids the safer and cleaner we can keep our neighborhoods.
If you are unsure if your local store or mechanic will accept the oil you can check with recycleoil.org for a list of places that will accept it near you.
